Winter maintenance for your swimming pool may not be a topic on many people’s minds during the Holiday Season. Yet you probably may have heard of “winterizing” your pool. This term has different meanings depending on where you live. The following is a list of the top four things that every Central Florida pool owner should do to maintain their swimming pools between now (the winter months) and the spring season.
Continue Cleaning Your Pool
It is still important to maintain your usual cleaning routine even though you are using your swimming pool less, if at all, during the winter months. There are lots of leaves falling at this time of the year, so make sure you empty the debris traps every few days to prevent the leaves and dirt from building up and clogging your pool’s filtration system. You also need to make sure that you keep your filter clean and to continue to vacuum your pool as usual.
Monitor Your Pool’s Water Level
Less rain and the colder temperatures that we see in Florida during the winter months will cause the water in your pool to evaporate. The water level can drop as much as one or two inches (or more) every week during this time of the year. In order to prevent the pool’s water level from going down too low, make sure that you keep an eye on it and refill it with water to the proper as necessary.
Prevent Algae Build-Up
Although colder days do come during the Florida winter, the temperature fluctuates enough that our pool water is extremely prone to algae build-up and bloom. Make sure that you test the water and keep it circulating throughout the winter months. Always continue to test your pool’s water and keep it circulating. In order to prevent algae buildup, test your pool’s water chemicals and adjust as needed to keep them balanced. You can also reduce the chlorine levels sightly, as the water temperatures will be somewhat lower and there will be fewer people using the pool. Also, make sure that you keep the water circulating, so continue running the circulation pump for four to six (4-6) hours every day.

A pool heater is the best way to enjoy your pool year-round in Florida! Snow in most of Florida is a rarity (especially in the Orlando and Central Florida area) and most areas of Florida do not experience any type of frozen precipitation during the winter months.
